International Women’s Day

8 March 2011

Today is March 8, International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.

It may not be a national holiday here in Singapore – like in China, Russia or Vietnam – but we can still find ways to celebrate it. All day today, GET SINGAPORE will be featuring our female brandowners to celebrate their contributions to the retail industry here.

The first International Women's Day event was observed in Germany in 1911, making this year the IWD’s Global Centenary Year. The idea of having an international women's day was first put forward amidst rapid world industrialization and economic expansion that led to protests over working conditions. Today in 2011, its 100th year, communities of women’s organisations around the world will mark this great milestone in the journey of women to fair partnership in family, social, business and political life.
